Amanita cinereopannosa Bas Image location: Ledyard, Connecticut, USA Pileus: The caps of these mushrooms started off white, and as they aged they turned a light honey color. They are covered in white to brown/gray warts. The cap diameter is 9 – 9 1/2 cm in the three specimens I encountered. The margin is heavily scaled, not lined, and has lots of partial veil hanging from it. The cap shape is convex to depressed with age. Gills: The gills are white, close, and adnexed. The partial veil is present over the gills in at least one adult specimen. Stipe: The stem is mostly equal, white with a small bit of discoloration with age, and with a sheathing superior annulus. Above the ring zone, the stipe is notably lined or ridged. There are some scales present on the lower portion of the stipe. The flesh is white, not hollow. The total length of the mushroom (excluding base) is 10 cm (with base, 16 cm). Base: The base is clavate, no sac, possesing some recurved scales near the top. It is very tapered, and lightly rooting. The base measures 6 cm in length. Bruising: In 24 hours, no bruising was visible on the places I cut it. Possibly light tan with age. Habitat: Wooded roadside in New England, in August. They were nearby hardwoods and conifers, in the grass. Spore Print: Cream to off-white. Odor: Not strong. I did not wrap them up like I should have (I have a very weak sense of smell). That’s it! Thanks for any help. Recognized by sight: dark veil remnants on both cap and stipe.
