Solenopsis, Solenopsidini oymağına bağlı ısıran bir karınca cinsidir.[1][2] Ateş karıncası ısırığı insanda yanmanın verdiğine benzer bir acıya neden olur.[3] Propodeumları sayesinde kolayca tanınırlar.[4]
Kış uykusuna yatmamakta ancak aşırı düşük sıcaklıklara dayanabilmektedir.[5] Lycaenidae ve Riodinidae gibi kelebek türleriyle karşılıklı yarara dayalı ilişkiler kurabilmektedirler.[6][7]
